54 North Project Would Thin 40,000 Acres and Restore Huckleberry in the Umatilla National Forest – Comment by Sept. 25

The Umatilla National Forest wants to thin, treat, and reintroduce prescribed fire across roughly 40,000 acres of the North Fork John Day Ranger District, and it will use 156 miles of existing forest road to do the work. A working road system and a fire-resilient forest go together, and this project proves it. Submit a comment in support of the 54 North Project before the September 25 deadline.

Grasshopper Fire Lawsuit: Oregon Wild Stalled Mt. Hood Thinning Before Lightning Struck

Hug it, litigate it, and watch it burn. Oregon Wild’s serial litigation narrowed and stalled the Mt. Hood fuels work designed for this landscape, and sixteen days before the Grasshopper Fire started they served notice to sue over four more projects. The fire has since burned 77,000 acres and closed 50 trails through the end of the year, and BRC is documenting the pattern in its NEPA Jail tracker.

Oregon’s Blue Mountains forests are being rewritten for the first time since the 1990s, and one alternative would recommend 34,000 new wilderness acres and lock in 722,000 roadless acres where OHVs and mechanized use are banned outright. H.R. 7695 and S. 140 Would Permanently Repeal Roadless Rule

The 2001 Roadless Rule locked up 58.5 million acres of National Forest land, blocking road maintenance, wildfire mitigation, and reasonable access for 25 years. BRC supports H.R. 7695 and S. 140, two bills that would repeal the rule and return management decisions to local forest managers. Contact your members of Congress and ask them to support both bills.

Oregon BLM Plan for 2.5 Million Acres Could Restrict OHV Access

The BLM is revising management plans for 2.5 million acres of western Oregon public lands, and without clear direction, motorized access could take a serious hit.
