RAISING FUNDS FOR SAVE THE RIDERS DUNES
The Oregon Dunes Are Under Legal Attack!
In June 2024, the Center for Biological Diversity filed suit against the U.S. Forest Service in federal district court in Eugene, claiming the agency violated the Endangered Species Act by allowing OHV use in the Dunes. The lawsuit targets the very events and riding that have sustained this community for generations.
The case is now pending before the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. A ruling could come at any time, and we need to be prepared to take the next steps if necessary to defend our access to the Dunes. If the Court rules in favor of Center for Biological Diversity, it could shut down permitted OHV events in the Dunes immediately and add a new play to the playbook that has already been used to shut down thousands of miles of trails in the Mojave Desert.
What CBD Won’t Tell You
OHV riders aren’t the villains here — and the science isn’t nearly as settled as the CBD’s press releases suggest. Here is what the lawsuit conveniently ignores:
- OHV access has already been dramatically reduced. Riders are currently limited to roughly 19% of the Dunes — and most of that is open sand, not vegetated marten habitat.
- The coastal marten lives in vegetation. The same open sand that OHV riders use is not primary marten territory.
- There is no definitive scientific data linking OHV use to marten deaths or population decline in the Dunes.
- Save the Riders Dunes has partnered with the Forest Service for years on invasive vegetation removal, helping restore dune habitat — over 45 acres cleared and cleaned. Riders are stewards, not destroyers.
This is just another example of the Center for Biological Diversity weaponizing the Endangered Species Act to ban OHV use.
Why This Matters Beyond Oregon
The CBD’s playbook is not new. Sue under the ESA. Seek injunctions. Shut Down trails. Shut down events. In some cases they can create enough legal uncertainty that organizers cancel voluntarily even before a ruling comes down. They’ve used it at Oceano Dunes in California. Oregon is next in line.
If the CBD wins here it will establish precedent that OHV events in critical habitat are essentially illegal under the ESA without a burdensome federal permitting process that may never be completed. That’s a template that can be applied to public lands riding areas nationwide.
This is not just about the Oregon Dunes. This is about whether organized OHV events have a future on federal lands.
We can’t continue to let this playbook go unchallenged.
Defending Our Ground
Our Plan to Fight Back
Save the Riders Dunes (STRD) was founded in 2009 when a group of dune riders gathered around a campfire after a Forest Service travel management meeting and decided that someone needed to stand up for access. They’ve been doing it ever since — challenging bad EIS decisions, partnering with the Forest Service on conservation projects, educating riders on safety and responsibility, and now fighting this lawsuit.
STRD has been engaging on this issue since the earliest stages of the Dunes EIS process. They know this fight. They know this landscape. And they’re not backing down. They have been defendants in this legal battle with Center for Biological Diversity, and they need the national community of OHV users to back them in this fight.
Legal battles are expensive, and we have to be prepared for this one to go the distance.
