54 North Project Would Thin 40,000 Acres and Restore Huckleberry in the Umatilla National Forest – Comment by Sept. 25

The Umatilla National Forest wants to thin, treat, and reintroduce prescribed fire across roughly 40,000 acres of the North Fork John Day Ranger District, and it will use 156 miles of existing forest road to do the work. A working road system and a fire-resilient forest go together, and this project proves it. Submit a comment in support of the 54 North Project before the September 25 deadline.

H.R. 7695 and S. 140 Would Permanently Repeal Roadless Rule

The 2001 Roadless Rule locked up 58.5 million acres of National Forest land, blocking road maintenance, wildfire mitigation, and reasonable access for 25 years. BRC supports H.R. 7695 and S. 140, two bills that would repeal the rule and return management decisions to local forest managers. Contact your members of Congress and ask them to support both bills.

Washington WDFW Rule Could Close OHV Access on 1M Acres

A new WDFW rule proposal would reverse the current open-unless-closed policy on more than one million acres of state-managed land, effectively closing every unsigned route with no realistic path to reopening them. The cost to rural communities, volunteers, and emergency responders will be significant. Contact WDFW now and demand they keep these lands accessible.

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife is taking public comment on a proposal to permanently close Little Parke Creek Road to motorized use, a move that would cut off access to a larger network of routes and set a troubling precedent for future closures. The SEPA process skipped reasonable alternatives and moved forward without meaningful motorized-user involvement. Urge WDFW to reconsider by February 5, 2026.
