The Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comment in regards to the Johnson Hill (Gordy’s Hill) Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA). The area is currently used for OHV use and we would like to see that use continue to it’s full extent. The BLM does not offer much information regarding the the SRMA plan or the travel management plan. A map is provided for the public to look at but it does not show any detail regarding the proposed actions. This comment period is important because it is the first of five SRMA plans being looked at and will certainly set a precedent for other recreation areas in New Mexico.
Blue Ribbon Coalition is working to gather more information and make sure that the new proposals will not restrict recreation including that of motorized use. If you have information on the matter, please share it with us. We will update the public as we learn more.
Please submit a comment below supporting open access to this area by Dec. 17th. Comments are always best received if they include your own words and experiences.
UPDATE: After connecting with New Mexico 4-Wheelers we have learned that they have created and maintained a great relationship with the land agency. We appreciate the trail inventory work NM4W has done that has been shared with the BLM to ensure accuracy and validity of their maps. Because of local groups, this plan is looking to be a productive process for motorized users. This area is very popular for off-roaders and jeepers with trails varying from easy to difficult. BRC plans to continue to work with the local groups as well as the BLM as this process continues to unfold.
I support continued OHV use at Johnson’s Hill.
Our entire family, 4 generations, have enjoyed riding and racing at Gordy’s Hill. I really hope that the OHV use will be maintained at its current level. Thank you.
I have ridden in this area only once on an offroad trip fromm the Mexican Border to Canada. This was one of those great areas that I want to return to to explore. As an older person now pretty much confined to a Jeep. I appreciate single track trails and minimally maintained but accessible open trails into or with a couple miles of the interesting parts of these areas. So many people do not enjoy the outdoors because we seem to have less time to “backpack” in. I am for multiuse trails for all to enjoy. Usually there are no conflicts unless one party or another are not being considerate. Thanks for the chance to add.
We love riding at Gordy’s hill. Please leave this area open for ohv use. We already don’t have enough ohv areas to ride. I’d sure hate to lose another great area to use to ride and have races.
We need to keep our existing trails as great outdoors. These treasures that make NM great and attractive to visitors and tourists!
Please keep Johnson Hill open to the public and vehicles
Please do not restrict off road vehicle access at Johnson’s Hill (or other BLM areas). Off road recreation is very important to me and many others!
It’s nice to see land being used for off-road and camping we definitely need to keep the land and trails open
Only been there once, but would love to go back and see all the trails out there and see the landscape.
Hello,
I am a strong advocate for keeping the Johnson Hill Gordy’s OHV area open to the public for off road recreation. I first came to Socorro back in 2008 where I began my undergraduate degree at New Mexico Tech. I was soon introduced to the trails out at Gordy’s OHV and have many fond memories with friends out exploring the area. I came to lead the New Mexico Tech off road club (nmtorc) as president and had a hand in working with the BLM field office to map many of the 4×4 off road trails in hopes a land management act would be completed. Although, I am no longer living in Socorro, I still frequently visit the area to enjoy the great outdoors that Johnson Hill Gordy’s OHV has to offer. I would very much like to participate in any form or shape to ensure the off road trails that we have been using for years remain open. Thank you, Richard Rivera
This is an awesome place to take your family out and run run trails. Please keep the land open to OHV
Yes this area should remain open to all ATVs and other off road used
