No Lame Duck Land Grab
Your Action Matters: Help Us Oppose Lame Duck Monument Proposals
We have identified NINE monuments encompassing nearly FIVE MILLION acres in several states that we believe are likely to be designated in a lame duck land grab. We have created a series of Action Alert to make it easy for you to take action to share your opposition to each of these monuments to elected representatives. It is crucial that they hear from you to ensure that reversing lame duck land grabs becomes a top priority of the next Administration.
The Kw’tsán National Monument is one of the monuments that we believe is highly likely to be designated. This monument is dangerously close to the OHV riding areas in Glamis, and we believe everyone who recreates in Glamis should oppose this monument.
For several years environmental groups have been calling on Congress or the President of the United States to designate the Chuckwalla National Monument in California. The proposed monument would span anywhere from 600,000-700,000 acres from the Coachella Valley region in the west to near the Colorado River in the east.
For the past several years, BlueRibbon Coalition has been sounding the alarm on a potential national monument designation just east of Fresno, California. The Range of Light National Monument is a proposal to lock up 1.4 million acres – basically encompassing the entire Sierra National Forest.
The proposed Sáttítla National Monument seeks to designate over 200,000 acres in northeastern California’s Medicine Lake Highlands as a protected area. This region includes portions of the Shasta-Trinity, Klamath, and Modoc National Forests.
Advocacy groups in Idaho are working hard to build public support for a potential designation of Island Park, Idaho area into the Caldera National Monument. This monument would include the Henry’s Fork Caldera and the half of the Island Park Caldera that lies outside of Yellowstone National Park. As you can see from the map below, the proposal would include land to the East of Island Park Reservoir and land surrounding Henry’s Lake State Park.
For years BlueRibbon Coalition has been working to oppose and prevent the designation of the proposed Dolores River Canyon National Monument in western Colorado. It will cause significant issues for public access to lands, the local economic stability, and responsible land management.
At the end of President Obama’s last term in office, he designated 1.3 million acres in southeastern Utah as the Bears Ears National Monument. This was a lame duck land grab that was publicized to the public through a tweet. Now, behind closed doors, the Bureau of Land Management is having more discussions about another potential national monument to the east of Bears Ears and to the west of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument in Colorado and surrounding Hovenweep National Monument in southeastern Utah.
Oregon Senators Wyden and Merkley have introduced legislation to create designated Wilderness within Oregon and Idaho. Because this legislation has never had enough support to be passed proponents of locking up the Owyhee canyons are calling on Senators and the President to designate a national monument instead known as the Owyhee Canyonlands National Monument.
We're building support for our No Lame Duck Land Grab Campaign
With a decisive election set to alter the balance of power in Washington D.C., it is likely that the Biden Administration will designate millions of acres of National Monuments across the country during the final weeks of the Biden Presidency. These designations could drastically limit public access to lands we cherish for recreation.
We’re building support for our No Lame Duck Land Grab Campaign to sound the alarm and rally opposition to these proposals. And we need your help!
If you make a $25 donation to BlueRibbon Coalition, we’ll send you 5 No Lame Duck Land Grab rubber ducks—inspired by the Jeep tradition of “ducking.” These ducks aren’t just fun; they’re a way to spread the word. Share them with fellow adventurers, Jeep lovers, and public lands advocates to grow our community of supporters.
Together, let’s keep public lands open for everyone to enjoy. Donate today and join the movement!
