The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed allowing e-bike use on the Paradise Royale Trail System to Class 1 e-bikes in the King Range National Conservation Area (KRNCA). Known for its rugged terrain and breathtaking landscapes, the KRNCA is 62,363 acres and is located along the coast of Northern California and offers amazing views of the ocean.

The proposal stems from the BLM’s efforts to modernize recreation in line with the 2005 KRNCA Resource Management Plan. The plan recognized the need for more mountain biking opportunities. This is the first step to expand these opportunities with the growing popularity of e-bikes.

Proposed Action and Alternatives

  1. Proposed Action: Allow Class 1 e-bikes on the Paradise Royale Trail System. These pedal-assist e-bikes provide motor support only when pedaling, with a maximum speed of 20 mph. This option promotes inclusivity, enabling individuals who may find traditional mountain biking challenging to enjoy the trails. The trail system encompasses over 23 miles.
  2. No Action Alternative: Retain current restrictions, limiting the trail system to non-motorized uses like hiking and traditional mountain biking.
  3. Alternative 3: Only a portion of the Paradise Royale Trail system would be open to Class 1 e-bikes.

What This Means for Adventure Seekers

If approved, this proposal could open the door for a more diverse group of outdoor enthusiasts to experience the KRNCA’s world-class trails. E-bikes offer an accessible option for families, older riders, and individuals with varying physical abilities, potentially making the KRNCA a model for inclusive recreation.
