
JOB TITLE: Marketing and Communications Director
Job Summary:
BlueRibbon Coalition is a national nonprofit organization that works to protect access to all forms of outdoor recreation on America’s public lands with a strong history of advocating for motorized recreation activities.
BlueRibbon Coalition is seeking a seasoned Marketing & Communications Director to strategically and creatively advance our visibility, reputation, and relevance with multiple constituencies, including off-roaders, overlanders, dirt bikers, snowmobilers, donors and members, land managers, and lawmakers. We are looking for someone who will increase BlueRibbon Coalition’s influence, deepen engagement with our content, and inspire the public and our community to support our mission. We are a national organization with a growing national audience of members and supporters. The Marketing & Communications Director develops and implements a broad range of communications, marketing, public relations, and mass fundraising strategies to strengthen our organization.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee annual strategic marketing planning and budgeting process, develop and implement marketing initiatives in alignment with financial and mission goals and in collaboration with our team. Monitor and report performance of marketing initiatives to executive staff and board of directors. Manage the department budget.
- Lead marketing innovation for the organization. Research, develop, deploy, monitor, and analyze new marketing strategies to keep BlueRibbon Coalition on the cutting edge of nonprofit marketing strategy.
- Act as chief brand marketer, setting strategy, messaging, and look and feel across all brand collateral, print advertising, communications, video and the BlueRibbon Coalition website. Primary project manager for all brand projects. Monitor and enforce brand standards across the organization.
- Serve as primary creative director for our brand, working with freelance designers and illustrators to develop compelling visual assets that bring the brand to life.
- Attend trade shows and events that align with our mission and ensure that our event presence is effective. Work with event specialist to develop successful event marketing strategies.
- Grow BlueRibbon Coalition’s public relations footprint by building out a disciplined national PR strategy and program. Act as primary contact for all media and proactively work to develop and curate a database of responsive media contacts. Develop and manage regular ongoing PR campaigns in multiple media markets. Work with Executive Director to place editorial content in notable media publications.
- Lead BlueRibbon Coalition’s mass fundraising strategy, collaborating with the Executive Director and Social Media Content Strategist to identify appropriate messaging and channel strategy for major fundraising campaigns.
- Support and manage the growth of the membership program, providing high-level strategic leadership in the growth and retention of BlueRibbon Coalition’s membership, in alignment with revenue goals. Partner with Social Media Content Strategist to ensure social media and digital marketing presence is optimized, growing, and aligned with brand and communications strategy.
- Support and manage the execution of the organization’s core content deliverables, including: weekly e-newsletter, action alerts, blog content, news content, fundraising content, podcast, and social media content across all major platforms.
- Manage and coordinate the efforts of existing marketing staff which includes a social media content strategist and an event specialist. Manage, maintain, and grow a pool of outside contractors (including graphic designers, website developers, videographers, writers, copy editors, etc.) to implement marketing initiatives.
- Develop and oversee marketing calendar for producing and releasing content.
- Work in collaboration with the Executive Director to identify and produce high-impact marketing collateral to support major gift initiatives.
- Work in collaboration with Policy Director and Litigation Team to promote and effectively communicate BlueRibbon Coalition’s work through communications, marketing collateral, and public relations efforts designed to influence policy makers and legislators.
- Oversee front end of BlueRibbon Coalition’s website, including design, user interface, architecture, and content management to ensure that our website is a functional tool for accomplishing our mission.
Desired Skills and Qualities:
- Passionate About Our Mission – Motivated to be part of a movement to expand recreation access to our public lands for all recreation users with a heavy emphasis on motorized recreation. An ideal candidate will have deep experience recreating on public lands. Ideally a candidate will also be actively engaged and a recognized leader of the outdoor recreation community. A strong command of public policy and issues advocacy is a must – an emphasis on public land policy is preferred.

- Strategic Thinking + Tactical Execution – Strategic thinker who is also comfortable with day-to-day execution. Must have experience with building complex, multi-faceted, long-term campaigns. While there will be times where the position is managing delegated work to other contractors and staff, this position requires a successful candidate to also be capable of performing any necessary day-to-day tasks.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Preferred 5-10 years of experience in marketing and communications, at least 2 years in a senior leadership position.
- Demonstrated experience in both traditional and digital marketing, as well as public relations and media strategy.
- Demonstrated solid understanding of AI technologies and tools to quickly scale marketing initiatives.
- Skilled project manager with excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through. Ability to balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, working well under pressure and adapting to challenges and opportunities with a solution-oriented perspective.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including the management and support of team members, building relationships with external stakeholders, and sound judgment and decision-making skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Must be able to repurpose messaging content to multiple audiences across various platforms.
- Excellent media literacy skills that include fluency and adaptability across all major social media platforms. You must have a professional understanding of every major platform, which includes knowledge and experience with getting successful organic and paid traffic. We are looking specifically for candidates who have been part of building a brand that gets reach metrics in the millions with high engagement.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and managing department budgets.
- Proficient and comfortable working in platforms such as a CRM database, content management systems, email and sms marketing platforms, marketing automation software, and analytics programs.
- Understanding and interest in a variety of outdoor recreation experiences and lifestyles. We fight for people to have access to outdoor adventures, and we want someone who is adventurous, who is comfortable taking risks, and has experienced the reward of going that extra mile.
- The position is 100% remote. We will be scrutinizing your depth of understanding of issues that primarly affect those who live in the western United States. The job will require a regular presence across the West, so even though the position is remote, the physical location of an applicant is a factor we will consider. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
- BA/BS, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.

Salary: $65-75K/year. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
